Fear and Courage in Media
“Lions, and Tigers, and Bears. Oh my!”
“Spooky, scary skeletons send shivers down your spine!”
Fear. What do you think of when you hear the word? Spiders? Snakes? Dark? Loneliness?
I am personally afraid of heights (among many other things!).
Many movies and shows invoke feelings of fear or discomfort. Do you think that a movie can create a fear for someone? Have you experienced that before?
In my experience, I do think that movies can increase fears we already hold. I was terrified of the dark as a child. I thought of all the possible monsters that could be under the bed or in the closet. Movies filled the closet with possible monsters.
Conversely, I also took great courage from movies. When I was afraid, I would think of Scooby-doo. As I got older, I thought of Aragorn instead. I had great role models from media who could go on no matter the odds.
I believe we can learn fear from movies, but we can also learn great courage from movies.
What movie gave you courage as a child?
Oh those are good movies to make you courageous. I think that sometimes movies that gave me courage, also had elements that I feared. For example, I love Harry Potter, but I hate spiders. I would still use examples of Harry Potter to gain confidence though.
ReplyDeleteYour examples of movies enhancing or fear and courage was great! It is such a great example of how media really impacts us.
ReplyDeleteThis is great! One movie that gave me courage as a kid was the Incredibles. I loved how even though Violet was shy, she was still able to face her fears and help her family!
ReplyDeleteThe intro was so engaging! Fear is very real and relatable to so many. I find that media is the greatest source of fear or bringer/reminder of fear for many people now. And yet courage is also brought forth almost at the same time or as the solution to it.
